Working to improve Retention and Success

Student retention and success (R&S) should be the highest priority for any educational institution. What happens between students and their teachers and amongst students themselves is critical to R&S, but everything about a student’s life affects their ability to prepare, participate, and perform in their programme. Educators cannot solve the challenges of our students, but we can be aware of those issues and provide reasonable, compassionate teaching and learning support when those issues become barriers to learning.

The diagram below is designed to prompt the thinking of programme teams  to consider the issues that impact learner retention and success in the design, assessment and facilitation of a course or programme of study, the academic and pastoral support that should be available to learners, as well as an increase, over time, of a course’s or programme’s R&S statistics.

This VEE diagram is not a curriculum, but a starting point. Use the questions to develop your thinking and discussions around retention and success, and please feel free to contact us if you would like to talk more.
